Foods to avoid while breastfeeding
Babies get their nutrition and vitamins from their mother’s milk. It’s essential as the milk helps in the growth and development of an infant. It gets digested easily and protects the baby from any sort of illness. Formula milk can also be used instead of mothers milk, but it lacks vitamins required for the baby. Breastfeeding is beneficial both for the baby and the mother. Even the doctors recommend to extensively give newborn mothers milk rather than formula milk. Breastfeeding also helps mothers to lose their weight while feeding their baby.
Mother’s milk is dependent on what food she consumes. A good and healthy diet will contribute to delivering a nutritious and good quantity of milk. Breastfeeding contributes to post-delivery weight loss, and the milk contains essential antibodies too. It’s recommended that a mother should extensively breastfeed her child for up to 6 months or more depending on how she’s lactating. But a mother just can’t eat anything, so here are some foods which she can avoid during the period of breastfeeding:
Seafood is rich in protein and vitamins. It’s recommended to consume seafood in moderation while breastfeeding. As fishes contain some level of mercury and get mixed with the milk when you consume. This, in return, can harm your newborn, so it’s advisable to consume fish which contain less mercury. You can also have sushi but also in moderation.
Consuming alcohol is a big no while breastfeeding your baby. It can have effects on your baby and you too. But if you are really craving for it, then you can have a drink after your last nursing time of day. As the alcohol effects will be less and not mixed with the milk. Do not feed right after you consume alcohol.
3. Gassy foods
Foods such as cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, beans and sprouts can give your infant gas problems. These foods might be easy for you to digest, but when your baby feeds on the milk, it gives them colic problems. So keep a track with what food your child is comfortable with and consume that.
4. Medicines and supplements
Before taking your multivitamins or any weight loss supplements, please consult a doctor. It’s also recommended not to take any sort of pills with the proper consultation. The pills may affect the quality of your milk produced and will affect the baby too.
5. Sage, peppermint or herbs
These items do add to the case of the dish, but lactating mothers should be careful while consuming it. You can consume them in less quantity and if your baby shows any sign of discomfort, then skip it altogether.
6. Spices or chillies
When a nursing mother consumes spices, it gets mixed with the milk she produces. The milk might affect the baby, causing indigestion or gas, so eating spices in very less quantity is optimum. You can also completely cut off the red chill from your food. This will also help.
7. Tea or coffee
We mothers get tired nursing the baby on and off, and all we want is a hot cup of tea or coffee to refresh our mind. But the caffeine present in the tea and coffee end up mixing with the milk. This will affect the baby’s napping schedule and the mothers too. So if possible, cut these off from your diet or consume in limited quantities.
8. Fatty foods or over-processed foods
These foods not only add up to your weight but also end up with your milk production. These food items will satisfy your craving but have no nutritional value. So it’s better to eat home-cooked food as it will help you lactate better and your baby doesn’t get affected too.
There might be more likely food or beverage items that affect the lactation and the baby too. The above mentioned items might work for some mothers and for some it might not. So it’s you who has to notice the baby and adjust your diet accordingly. Most of the babies show common symptoms and discomfort but not all. Remember to eat in intervals and to eat healthily. If you notice any difference in your lactation or the newborn consult a doctor immediately. Drink plenty of fluids and ears fresh vegetables and fruits. These help in generating milk full of vitamins and antibodies.
Eating a healthy and colorful diet helps both the mother and the baby. The baby doesn’t get any gas or discomfort or constipation when their mother feeds in clean and less spicy food.
